Passives are easy to substitute, many alternatives are available. It’s a waste of time, but we can solve the problem. With active parts and ICs we can try some tricks like looking for the same part with different suffixes. For in-house prototyping purposes, we don’t mind buying them in tube, tray or cut-tape (even bulk). Let’s give it a try:

Booting Linux on an Olimex board. In the last post we left it right after launching the Kernel, however, according to Bootlin training docs, for a Linux system to work, we need at least a few applications:

An init application, which is the first user space application started by the Kernel after mounting the root filesystem

A shell, to implement scripts, automate tasks, and allow a user to interact with the system

Basic UNIX executables, for use in system scripts or in interactive shells: mv, cp, mkdir, cat, modprobe, mount, ifconfig, etc.

In embedded systems, all these are usually provided by Busybox, which is already built into our filesystem by Buildroot. The entire launch process is depicted below:

Understanding PSM settings in NB-IoT

One of our lines of work is cellular connectivity. In particular we are interested in pre-5G (according to 3GPP) technologies like NB-IoT and LTE-M. Quite often the project’s requirements mean we end up using regular 2G, but we are continuously exploring the newest available features to understand the pros and cons and choose what best suits our (and our customers) needs.

Today we are going to focus on one of these new features: Power Saving Mode (PSM) in Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT). PSM has been introduced in both LTE-M and NB-IoT (along with eDRX which will not be covered today). There are a few things which you should know, but in short, the modem is put into a sort of sleep mode while staying registered to the cellular network. This last bit is key, because registering usually takes a large percentage of the time and energy of a duty cycle.

Booting Linux on an Olimex board. In fact, I had to read it again myself. To bring you up to speed, let me remind you that in that first post, we built and launched an U-Boot bootloader. We left it just before configuring everything to launch a Linux Kernel using TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol), a simplified version of FTP. And that’s exactly what we are going to do next.

From prototype to manufacturing

Today we’d like to share with you a short post with a few pictures of one of our most exciting projects this year.

As you probably know if you follow us online, earlier this year our engineers together with a team of Ubiquo Technologies took part in HACKatHOME. This was a hackathon organized by Xunta de Galicia (local government) to find solutions to fight the first wave of the Coronavirus and we turned out to be the winners of our category (“Low Touch” Solutions). This was of course really exciting for us and it meant the project we’ve been working during the previous months (aka “The Lockdown”) made sense.

What is Time-of-Flight Technology?

This summer we were one of the few companies selected to participate in the Connect 19 program to boost sales of our Ntouch line of products that have been designed to fight the spread of COVID-19. The “pythonic” way of designing encourages this idea of abstracting and simplifying code, making it visually easy to quickly grasp the actual functionality being implemented, This obviously comes at a cost, as the code is generally neither as efficient nor as compact as a C/C++ version, without mentioning the other characteristics of being an interpreted language, lack of strong variable typing and depending on the garbage collector for memory control.

HACKatHOME winners!

Yesterday we achieved an important milestone. After 4 days of intense work -and two more months of hard work far from the spotlight-, we won the HACKatHOME hackathon. The goal was to find solutions to fight COVID19 and it has been a great opportunity for us to explore and understand the wide range of opportunities created by our most recent project, the SC Touchless.

But as you can imagine, hardware is only a small part of the product. On the software side of the project we’ve been collaborating with our friends of Ubiquo Techs, who have developed a platform called Ubox to create virtual experiences that can be easily controlled with the SC Touchless.

Booting Linux on an Olimex board. The family of devices based on ARM Allwinner SoCs are usually known as sunxi, in particular, our A20 SoC belongs to the sun7i family.

This process can be done manually by compiling a toolchain, the bootloader, the kernel and creating the root file system manually, however I’m going to taken a shortcut by using Buildroot to generate the images, though I will flash them one by one and modify them slightly. If you want to know how to do it without relying on a build system, Bootlin has some great material from their trainings.

Using TF Lite for microcontrollers to monitor battery status

I am not going to be the first (or last) person to discuss the benefits associated with the current trend moving intelligence away from high power server farms in the cloud towards sensors embedded On The Edge™. All this drawing much less power and consuming less bandwidth than traditional methods.

Debugging a Cortex-M microcontroller

When I started working with ARM microcontroles, I found myself lost among large amounts of information about how to program them, debug them and even about different ways to show logs.
